Things To Do

Things to Do in St. John, USVI (Besides the Beach!)

THE ST. JOHN EDIT | M.Fairchild Edit

After 12 trips to St. John, I can tell you that the beaches are absolutely the main attraction. But there's so much more to this little Caribbean island than beautiful sand and turquoise water.

One of my favorite things about St. John is that you don't need a packed itinerary. Some of our best days have been spent exploring the island in our Jeep, stopping for lunch, browsing little shops, or finding somewhere with an incredible view and a cold drink.

Here are some of my favorite ways to spend time on St. John when we're not at the beach.

Spend a Day Exploring by Boat

If you're going to splurge on one experience, make it a day on the water.

Renting a boat with a captain is such a fun way to explore the Virgin Islands. You can visit beautiful coves, snorkel, swim, and stop at some of the area's most unique restaurants.

Two fun stops to consider are Pizza Pi, the floating pizza boat in Christmas Cove, and Lime Out, the floating taco bar in Coral Bay.

My brother-in-law offers boat charters in the area, so I have a personal recommendation for anyone looking to plan a day on the water.

Explore Cruz Bay & Mongoose Junction

I love spending time in Cruz Bay, especially after a morning at the beach.

Mongoose Junction is one of my favorite places to wander. The beautiful stone architecture, little boutiques, restaurants, and tropical surroundings make it such a charming place to spend an afternoon.

We often stop for lunch, browse the shops, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere before heading back to our villa.

Take a Scenic Drive Around the Island

One of my favorite things about St. John is simply exploring.

Rent a Jeep, roll down the windows, and head out for a drive. The island is full of winding roads, incredible overlooks, and beautiful views around practically every turn.

And keep an eye out for the donkeys!

We especially love spotting them when heading toward Francis Bay. It's one of those little things that makes St. John so memorable.

Visit the Annaberg Sugar Plantation Ruins

If you're interested in the island's history, Annaberg is worth exploring.

Located within Virgin Islands National Park, the historic sugar plantation ruins offer a glimpse into St. John's colonial history and the lives of the enslaved people whose labor sustained the plantation.

The surrounding views are beautiful, too.

It's a worthwhile stop to learn more about the island beyond its beaches.

Hike the Island's Beautiful Trails

St. John is home to Virgin Islands National Park, which offers some wonderful hiking opportunities.

The Reef Bay Trail is a well-known option for more adventurous visitors, while shorter trails such as the Lind Point Trail offer opportunities to explore the island's natural beauty.

Be sure to bring plenty of water, wear proper shoes, and consider the heat and trail conditions before heading out.

Watch the Sunset at The Windmill Bar

One of my favorite recommendations is to head to The Windmill Bar for sunset.

The panoramic views are incredible, and there's nothing better than settling in with a cocktail while watching the colors change over the Caribbean.

It's a beautiful way to end the day.

Enjoy a Day at Lovango Resort & Beach Club

For something a little more elevated, consider a visit to Lovango Resort & Beach Club.

Located on its own small island, Lovango Cay, it's a lovely option for a special lunch, beach club experience, or relaxing afternoon.

Check current reservations and transportation options before visiting.

My Favorite Thing About St. John

You don't need to do everything.

Some days we explore. Some days we take a boat out. And some days we simply spend the morning at the beach, grab lunch in Cruz Bay, and spend the afternoon by our villa pool.

That's the beauty of St. John.

It's an island that encourages you to slow down and enjoy every minute.
